Reset Service Light Volvo 850, S70, V70, C70, XC70

Volvo 850 (1993-1995)

  1. There are two diagnostic units(it says A and B on the cover) located adjacent to washer reservoir under the hood. Turn on the ignition and open the module A and insert the flylead into socket 7.
  2. Press the button on the diagnostic unit 4 times, briefly but firmly. Then the LED illuminates and stays illuminated, and the system is ready to accept manual code input. A code number for resetting the service reminder light is 1-5-1. To do this, press the test button once and release it And LED illuminates again.
  3. Then press 5 times and wait for the LED to illuminate.
  4. Press the button once and LED should flashes several times in succession and the reminder should have been reset.
  5. Switch off the ignition and replace the flylead in its holder and close the cover.

Volvo 850 (1996-1997) and S70, V70 (1998)

You need an OBDII tool that resets Volvo service light codes. See this service light reset forum thread for more. They run about $100 to 200 — or — take it in to the dealer or independent Volvo mechanic and have them do it. Call to see if they charge for this first. Note: I’ve read reports of people having success with having the local Shucks/Pep Boys/Checker auto parts store do it.

S70 and V70 and C70 and XC70

  1. Press and hold odometer reset button
  2. Turn ignition switch to Run
  3. After SRL flashes, release odometer reset button
  4. Confirm by turning your Volvo off, then on again

Thank you so much for this info!!! End of dealership charges every 5K.

Update: it worked on my 850, but not on my V70 AWD :( Any ideas?

The sequence of holding the trip odometer button, turning the ignition, and then releasing the the trip odometer after the service light started flashing worked perfectly on my ‘07 V70. Three calls to my dealer yielding nothing. Fifteen seconds on this website and problem solved. Thank you.

I have a 2000 V70 XC SE w/ 144k. Just tried the reset service light per the above directions and it worked perfect. thank you so much. I just saved $105 (what the dealer wanted to charge all because I have my oil changed some where else)

  9. rslyons 2:27 pm on May 11th, 2009

Thank you for this posting. It saved me a bundle of money and it worked perfectly. Dealer told me he needed a “special” tool to reset the switch and I would be charged for 30 minutes labor. Yeah, the special tool is the key to the car and a finger to hold in the odometer button. It took all of 30 seconds to fix. THANK YOU!!!

    Great site.

Reset the Service Light, as per the simple instructions above, on my 2006 V70 2.4 D.

Saved a bomb on $tealer prices.

Thanks to everyone involved. Much appreciated.

I found it worked only if you release the odometer reset button as the SRL light was flashing. Releasing it after it had flashed did not do the reset. I have a 2007 XC70. My garage has never reset this when servicing the car. As a result, it is a pointless feature.

  12. Neil 7:01 pm on June 13th, 2009

Many thanks. I recently bought a C70 sports, and had a thorough service by a really good mechanic (not main dealer). Soon after the service needed light came on which was really annoying. Now sorted by following your simple instructions.

  13. dave 1:00 pm on June 23rd, 2009

This is great info. Will it work on the ‘08 XC90?

  14. Bob 10:10 am on June 25th, 2009

In my 1998 S70 the service light is on, I pressed the odometer reset button and turned the ignition to run. How long should it take for the service light to blink? It didnt’ start blinking within 1 minute. So am I doing something wrong? The instructions are clear.

  15. Gary Croft 11:17 am on June 28th, 2009

Thanks for the info. Used the odometer reset option and it work on first try with my C70 2004. Thanks for the post….

Thanks.. Works on my V70 :-D

  17. scsmarkwood 4:54 pm on July 31st, 2009

For my 2007 XC-70 I do the regular service myself and it is very frustrating to later see the regular maintenance light come on!
The instruction for resetting the maintenance service light worked as follows: With car off, push in and hold the odometer reset button. Start the car. Continue to hold the reset button until the service light flashes. It will take about 10 seconds until the light begins to flash. While it is still flashing, release the reset button. Turn off the car.
Not sure why the owner’s manual does not include these simple instructions?! Oh yes, I do…..$$$$$. No tools, no service visit fee! Ha!

  18. JB 1:59 pm on August 2nd, 2009

Thanks! Worked on my 1999 V70 GLT!

Everyone that can’t get this to work, press your TRIP reset button and hold it, THEN turn the ignition to the second click and it should flash within 10 seconds.

My only mistake is that I pushed the info reset button instead of the trip.

  19. LFA 6:42 pm on August 18th, 2009

THANK YOU… figured I had nothing to lose to try this on my 2005 XC90 and it worked like a charm. I HATE having to go to the Volvo service dept. at my dealer…it is expensive and time consuming. Thanks for saving me time and cash!

  20. TB 11:48 am on August 24th, 2009

My Volvo dealer was always happy to reset the light for me at no charge, and he did it immediately when I brought it in. My issue was that it took 1.5 to 2 hours of round trip driving to get there and home again.

I just learned this technique last month from a teenager working at one of those quick oil change places. It worked on both my 2001 S-80 and my 2007 V-70.

When I asked my Volvo service manager today why he never told me how to do this myself, he expressed surprise and said he thought the ONLY way to reset the service reminder light was through the computer. He did not know of any other method!

Our 2001 XC70 XCountry odometer reset light didn’t flash!! Am I not holding in the trip reset long enough, or maybe “RUN” is not the full turn of the ignition?? Back out to the garage!

  22. Jim 8:23 pm on September 17th, 2009

It worked on our 2005 XC70. Thanks for the information.

  23. Paul Dodsworth 7:46 am on October 5th, 2009

This worked on my Volvo S60 MY06. I will say though:

Hold in the trip button, start car, wait for around 10 secs or untill you,ll see the warning triangle in the center of the display flash. Remove your finger from the trip button before this flashing triangle stops otherwise it won,t work. Turn off engine………..finished. 30 seconds, no tool…no charge.

  24. jp 12:19 pm on October 5th, 2009

Worked great for my 2005 xc90. Done in 10 sec flat .
    thanks

    Aidy June 5th 2009 post,

You are right, my V70 only reset during the flashing and not after it had finished flashing.

    Great tip,

    Cheers,

    2. Turn ignition switch to Run
    3. After SRL flashes, release odometer reset button
    4. Confirm by turning your Volvo off, then on again

The method below worked like a charm on my 2004 XC70. THANK YOU!!!!

This method worked perfectly on 2000 S70

    1. Press and hold odometer reset button
    2. Turn ignition switch to Run
    3. After SRL flashes, release odometer reset button
    4. Confirm by turning your Volvo off, then on again

    Big time thanks.

  30. bluepenguin 3:15 pm on November 12th, 2009

This method worked perfectly on my 2008 C70. However, as mentioned on one of the posts, it only worked if I released the button while the “I” light was flashing. If I waited until it finished flashing, it did not work. Also, the trip odometer reset button had to be depressed BEFORE turning the ignition – even to the ONE level. If the ignition was on ONE and then the button was depressed, turning the ignition to TWO (RUN) did not work.
Hope this helps others who may have had problems following this method.

  31. Anthony 2:13 pm on November 16th, 2009

Worked well on 99 S80-T6.Thank you

  32. Ken 6:38 pm on November 19th, 2009

The 2008 V70 appears to be different. No key and no position 1 or 2 per se.

If I figure it out, I’ll be back(;-o)

  33. Ken 7:04 pm on November 19th, 2009

Okay! The secret is to release the odometer BEFORE the fifth info light blink!

    Done!

I’ve tried all the suggestions on my 1998 v70T5 but they don’t work. Service light still on. Any suggestions??

  35. kevmac 3:42 pm on December 4th, 2009

    Worked on my ‘05 XC90

  36. VolvoS70Driver 12:35 pm on December 27th, 2009

Note this will not work on the 1998 models. This is the first year of the S70 and it is somewhat of a bastard model having carried over many bits and pcs from the 850 but with some modified functions as well. 1999’s S70 was more mechanically/electrically redesigned so the methods began working again.
I ended up buying a reset tool from FCP Groton and it works as advertised.

  37. Darryl 10:57 am on January 22nd, 2010

Just tried it on my 2000 XC70 and it worked great. Thanks very much!!!

  38. Jimbo 7:37 pm on January 25th, 2010

I have tried this many times before without luck because the info I got (elsewhere) didn’t emphasize the SRL should be blinking. Just tried it on my 1999 S70 and it worked like a charm! The blinking light is the “secret.” Great! The method I used:

    1. Press and hold odometer reset button
    2. Turn ignition switch to Run
    3. After SRL flashes, release odometer reset button
    4. Confirm by turning your Volvo off, then on again

  39. pvolvo 10:01 am on January 29th, 2010

its nice to know this thanks, 850 has its own tool ond with your help i found it right in fron of me. thanks again.

  40. DrAcacio 6:02 pm on February 7th, 2010

Wait littel more then 10 seconds and after Servile light blinks ..leave button. and it works.
