98 S70 gas fumes when tank full

Postby dasapir » 24 Mar 2008, 18:05

Recently I have had a garage full of fumes after filling the gas tank on my 98 S70. I have inspected the tank as well as I can for leaks or any signs of staining and have found none. There is no smell when the car is idling and under the hood I cannot find and sign of leaking fuel nor is there any odor.

From what I can tell the strongest odor of gas is near the tank. Also, the connection to the fuel filter appears okay. My only guess is that it may be from the breather line to the fuel tank at the filler port.

My questions are:
1. how to access that since it is covered with a plastic sheath?
2. any other possibilities I might have over-looked?

Though the top of the fuel pump is sealed with a rubber gasket, I imagine gasoline could escape onto the top of the fuel tank under expansion pressure?

I think most cars are built in a way that gas pressure in the tank vents through EVAP systems to clean it before it hits the air.

It's still cold in Iowa, so I don't have expanding gas fume issues at the moment. In the summer when I'm pulling gas at the station from a 55F holding tank underground into my 80+F gas tank, it expands quite a bit and vents fumes whereever it can.

Fuel tanks are built so that even when overfilling to the neck there is still an air pocket in the top (dome) that allows for expansion. The OP has a leak somewhere, no doubt.

Time to dye the fuel and blacklight, to locate the leak. You can find the stuff online pretty cheap.

Be aware that there was a recall on the '98 S70 gas tank...due to the exact symptoms you describe. It's the filler neck that can get a small hole from chafing against the body of the car I believe. So, it might be a good idea to call your dealer, give them your VIN# and see if yours has ever been replaced. If you're covered, there shouldn't be any cost to this replacement.

Thank you for your replies. MIJ, I will call the dealer to check, but I know that my fuel tank has never been replaced, nor have I ever received a recall notice on this car for this issue. I purchased it used at 5,000 miles since the person who bought it preferred a Mercedes.
Anyway, dye and black-light sound like a good idea if all else fails. It is still cold in Indiana so not much of an expansion problem from heat at this tiem and this is a new problem. Having been through many a hot summer I could surmise that it is new leak, just difficult to trace.

On my wife's 95 Windstar I found that her filler tube had corroded through and I used weld putty. Completely fixed that problem. Maybe it is contagious.

MIJ, I have not found any information on a recall for 1998 S 70
volvos because of a gas tank leak or fumes.
Please do let me know if you have other information.
I have called the dealer and they do not know of nay recall for the gas tank, but they said they would check. They have not gotten back to me as of this writing.

Sorry, I looked it up and apparently it ended with the 850's, so no recall on the '98's at all, unless you have one of those '97 S70's (European or Canadian). http://www.car.com/content/own/service/ ... 0&id=25022

Thanks anyway. When the weather warms a bit more will do a dye test.
I just hope the leak will not be from a vent hoses originating on top of the tank. Appears difficult to reach without having to remove the tank.

Somehow my fear is that, especially since I can only smell the fumes when the tank is full and therefore near where the hoses insert.

Is it necessary to pull the tank to reach the rubber vent hoses?
If so has anyone pulled a tank before?
Is it something one can do relatively easily?

MIJ, thank you for the threads. I searched out volvospeeds bay 13 but not the threads. Yes indeed, I do think that this will help.

Since I haven't (yet , finger's crossed) replaced the fuel pump it most likely will be from the vent hose described. will try to get to it sometime soon.

I will post again when I do to let you know.

In the meantime I am truly obliged.
