Hood release cables for 1998 Volvo V70 AWD

Postby holler1 » Sun Aug 10, 2008 3:11 am

I need to replace both hood release cables, the cable from inside vehicle to driver's side latch and crossover cable from passenger's side to driver's side. I've tried for a couple of hours to find them online with no success. I'm wondering if someone might have the part numbers and/or have an online source. I'm 90 miles from the nearest dealer so prefer to order online if possible.

Also, if someone has installed a new driver's side cable, I need to know where it penetrates the firewall. One diagram posted by Bill of Durham seems to show it going through behind the wheel well liner (near the evap valve?). I'm hoping not to have to take off and replace the rivets in the liner unless necessary.

When I replace these cables, because of all the problems they cause, especially if they break, I'm thinking of also installing a couple of emergency release cables inserted through the latch release holes and hanging down from the latches inside the hood. That way if I have another cable break, I've got an alternate way in. It's impossible to manually reach the latches from the bottom of this vehicle- I have the scraped up arms to prove it.

On my 2000 it goes straight down from the hood latch a couple of inches, curves back under the battery, under the air cleaner box, around the shock tower and into the firewall through the large grommet just to the rear of the shock tower.

MIJ, that looks like it. Nice diagram, what is the source? I had a little time today, so I bought a generic choke cable kit from Advance Auto and modified the cable to make a crossover cable. The cable and sheath were both the right diameter. I cut the cable sheath to the right length, and bent the cable ends and filled them with solder. After a little adustment it fit and seems to work OK.

Instarx, that sounds the same as my routing but I couldn't see where the firewall penetration was. To avoid re-installing the drivers side cable sheath, I got a generic hood cable wire and put it through the existing sheath. I still need to connect it to the release handle but didn't have time today.

Thanks for the info.

Don't forget to adjust the hood latch (the left one) up so it has pressure on it, so when you pull the cable it takes very little effort to pop up

That is from VADIS. I just use "print screen," then paste into a graphics program and save as a jpg file that I can upload. You can buy a VADIS DVD disc from someone who's reputable on eBay for about $40~50. It does come in handy for cars that are not covered in the 850 repair manual which can be downloaded from this site.

JRL - Thanks, will do.

MIJ - Thanks again. I saw references to VADIS but wasn't sure what it was. I looked in the 850 manual but couldn't find the hood diagram. I had seen one for an 850 on another thread from Bill of Durham but it was a different design.
