    2000 Volvo V70 misfire concern

    Postby RSM-GA » 07 Dec 2008, 04:44

My car is a 2000 V70 non-turbo (stock). It was running fine when I drove home from work last night. Today, I started it up to drive to get lunch, it immediately started with a miss. Not really bad in park or neutral, but with a light load it was really bad. CEL lamp came on and I checked for codes -p0301 cyl #1 misfire. I went to the parts store and bought five Bosch platinum plugs and a coilpack for good measure. I installed the coil and all of the plugs. I restarted and at first it was ok then started missing again. Code P0303. I went and bought another coil and installed it. CEL again and this time it was P0302 #2 misfire. I went back and bought the last coil at the parts store and installed it. So far no more misfire and no more codes! Question - is it normal for 3 coils to fail like this at once?

    Thanks,
    Rob

    Welcome to MVS.
Could be the coil packs but doubtful. The Bosch Platinums are detested by our turbo Volvo's for some reason...they misfire often. You're better off doing just plain copper cores...and gap makes a big difference. The plugs you buy are hardly ever gapped correctly. You really need to make sure of this- 0.026~0.028 inch gap. If this doesn't keep the misfires away, next is your ignition wires- don't buy aftermarket- our cars are finicky about these too...Bougicord wires are the OEM brand.

Oops...you are correct. I would deal with the plugs and plug gaps first...still doubtful that many coil packs went bad at once, or right after another.

Drove car today to work and back (40-45 miles). Seems all is good now. No codes, no cel, no skipping or misfiring. Hope it is solved. Still don't understand how three of the five coils failed at the same time!!!!!
