98 v70 Rear Washer Fluid not releasing

Postby jbarrow8081 » 29 Dec 2008, 17:45

Hi - I have a 98 v70 with 145k miles. I am not getting washer fluid on the rear window. What i have checked so far....1) there is indeed fluid in the resevoir, the T Connection in the front is free and clear, I can hear the pump working. Is there another T connection that I should check or is it most likely the rear washer pressure valve? If so, is that an easy replace or worth a trip to the dealer? Thanks much!

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

There is an air valve vent under the left side floor panel in the load area. It looks a bit like a small petrol filter and they do occasionally block. Take the pipe off the forward end and see if water is coming out of the pipe. If yes re-connect it and take the pipe off the other end and try again. If yes suspect the jet on the tailgate.

Bill, Thanks so much for the info....when you say the left side floor panel in the load area do you mean the third seat section of the car? (my apologies, I am a bit of a novice). I appreciate your taking the time to reply. Happy New Year! Joe

I don't know my left from my right .

In the luggage compartment, on the right hand side there is a wooden panel which pulls out and that is where the valve is.

Sorry, about the wrong location. How long did you work on this before you realised you couldn't find it?

My wife often tells me that if I could remember where I had put my memory I would be able to remember what I was doing before I lost it. I just say that it is old age.

Hi Bill,

Ha Ha, not to worry....i did figure out how to get to the floor panel released on the right side (no wasted time :)) but i didn't see the filter. Regardless, I traced the line upward and found a connection around the height of the right rear speaker. I pulled that connection apart and could get the washer fluid to come out of the connection. Based on that my guess is its a clog where the fluid actually comes out on the rear window. I will look for a pin or something small to try and see if i can get any dirt disloged that way. Any suggestions on the best way to do that?

On another front, I also had to replace the rear lift struts for the trunk. I found some information that you had posted a while back that was very helpful. The job took about 30 minutes for a novice like me. Now the trunk wont fall on my head anymore!!!

Thanks again for your helpful suggestions.

Joe

For something like a washer jet I have acquired a very fine sewing needle from my wife's sewing box. It's a lot finer than a pin.

It also means that when she is looking for that needle I can come back at her with the memory thing. Revenge is sweet

Thanks for the suggestion re: the sewing needle. Unfortunately all of the ones at my home are still in the original packaging. That explains all the holes in my socks. :( have a great evening!

Unfortunately the "memory" thing doesn't work at my house yet...maybe next year when I hit 50? Anyway, the turkey baster...the needle- either of your tricks, Bill would send me to the couch for the evening.
Oh, and the socks...hmmm. I'll have to ask her about that one.
I suppose the only thing I've succeeded at at my house is getting out of doing the laundry. Shrinking some white wool sweaters and turning them pink seems to have helped with that (couch for that night too, but it was worth it!).

jbarrow8081 - maybe this link will help. I have not tried this yet, but will this weekend to see if I can get my rear spraying again too.

I, too, am having same/similar problem on my 2000 v70. I am NOT getting fluid to the rear valve, but my pump for the rear is working at the reservoir. So I am very curious to your resolution.
Please reply with your outcome so we can all benefit.

Thanks
Rob
