1997 Volvo 850 Air Cleaner Vacuum Hose

Postby ryan954 » Wed Jan 07, 2009 4:58 am

The black vacuum hose on the back of the air cleaner broke. Do I need to fix it? What will happen if I do not fix it? Thank you in advance for your assistance.

I can't tell from the picture but the later versions of the N/A models had a vacuum controlled airbox thermostat that went to the airbox.

At its best it just results in a vacuum leak (bad) and at its worst it results in a vacuum leak and the airbox thermostat being forced to the hot side (very bad).

On my 94, that hose controls a valve that pulls air in off of the exhaust manifold during cold starts. You can choose not to fix it, but make sure you plug the vacuum hose.

Duct tape man!
put it on where it broke off from and duct tape it for the time being. If you had a short piece of silicone hose, just wide enough to wedge the broken piece into and then zip tie it and then side the other end onto the air box and zip tie it too, you'd be golden and wouldn't have to replace it, ever. That's a return hose for some exhaust I believe so it's not a huge deal but non-the-less, it would create a small vacuum leak. If you don't have a turbo, it's not that big a deal.

Vacuum tree near the intake manifold.

Near here; sorry, don't have a good picture of it on its own

Look for an unused, uncapped port.

See this thread - sounds like you're talking about the exact same hose as this guy:

on my 98 v70, the black vacuum hose connects the top of the airfilter besides MAF to the left underside of airbox (if facing engine). hope that helps.
