98 S70 ABS LIGHT & TRAC OFF LIGHT STAY ON

Postby FIRSTIMEOWNER » Sat May 30, 2009 2:10 am

recently purchased a 98 S70 w/ 120,000. Just came back from a 180 mile round trip. Made one stop got back in the car started it and the ABS & TRAC OFF light came on and won't go off. Saw a similar post from 2005 but no responses to that specific issue? Any ideas??

Steve :(

It happened to my car too in March 2007. The dealer diagnosed it an ABS module failure. It is an electronic device so only dealer carries it. I recall the cost is about $600 ++ CAD for a new one.

I got a rebuild one with life time warranty for $400 CAD. I have no problem so far.

Hope your problem is something else and cheaper

400? That sounds painful...
That rebuild is available from several different places in the US for approx. $85-125.

Many have also successfully fixed it themselves.

If you're handy with a soldering iron, it's usually just bad solder joints.

You've come to the right place!

I know, very painful. I wish I have known this Volvo Forum earlier. I actually visit this guy's shop. He has about 10 workstations with a solder on each desk. He does nothing but rebuild ABS for all make. What a smart simple business but huge profit

Thanks Volvo Forum

This problem is now intermittent. The lights stay on every other time I start the car. I'll check some connections before I rip it out.

Steve,

Do you have any other strange symptoms when the ABS/Tracs lights are on? Inasmuch as it is intermittent this could be an ignition switch problem. The next time it acts up jiggle the key slightly and see if things clear up.

The ignition switch sounds intimidating but it is actually quite easy and relatively inexpensive to change.

Lee nothing else seems to be happening, but I will jiggle away tomorrow. A couple of times while driving with these two light lit, I have thrown the car in neutral, turned the engine off and then back on again and the lights have gone off!!
I took my trusty F150 SuperCrew to work today. 9 years old with 150K..no issues :-)

Lee, I've tried the key jiggle but to no avail. It is still intermittent and 9 times out of 10, when I shut the ignition off and then back on while driving, the lights go off.

Think it's the ABS module??

On a '98 (actually '96 and on) there are only two kinds of ABS modules, those that have died and those that are going to die.

There are several re-builders or you can crack it apart and fix it yourself if you know how to solder PC board solder joints. Details are in the database as to how I fixed mine.
