1999 V70 Idle lowers at stop/vibration when in gear

Postby jbrown122 » 13 Aug 2009, 16:09

A few months ago this problem started. When I stop at a light or whatever, the car stumbles, the idle goes to 400 or so, then goes back to normal. No check engine lights have ever come on from this problem, no vacuum leaks, other than that, the car idles great and smooth, no stalling or anything.

Also, the car is great in P or N, But when I put it into gear, it vibrates. Upper motor mount was replaced, I thought that was the problem.

Any ideas are greatly appreciated!

Also,
when I put it in neutral and stop, it does not stumble.

Out of curiosity, is your AC on when it does this? If so, let me know if it does it without the AC on.

It does it all the time, with or without AC.

I have some less-than-good news. This is a symptom of an impending ETM failure. :( Sometime in the next 20k miles, expect an ETS light and/or more severe symptoms. There is, as far as I know, nothing else that causes that in these cars. Not the gearbox, not the engine management, not a bad MAF...

I remember reading a forum post about the failure modes of ETMs on SwedeSpeed, outlining this as one of the first symptoms of impending ETM failure. Anybody remember/have the link?

Aw man!

I'm not eligible for the warranty anymore, my car was made in 98 sadly..

I really don't want to put $1000 more into this car!

I couldn't buy an ETM off ebay right, they need software, correct?

Should I try taking the hose off, and cleaning the ETM a little bit?

That is a good question. The US government got involved and pressed Volvo Cars North America into "voluntarily" extending the warranty. The policy here is that they would extend the warranty on the module "on your vehicle to 10 years or 200,000 miles from the original in service date".

I'm not sure what policy they have in Sweden.

My PVC system was extremely clogged and when replaced I cleaned the sludge out of the intake and throttle body and hoses /attachments going to turbo. The car now idles great with out that slight 100 rpm hunt and peck. This is the 99 turbo with the ETM under the intake.
BUT I'm now getting a slight vibration in the car when it's in gear with the brake on? Doesn't seem to show in park or reverse . What should I look for ? Runs 2600 rpm at 75 mph.
Thanks
