850 1993 check engine light out, can not smog

Postby dahubb » Sat Jan 16, 2010 11:00 pm

Went and got my car smoged today. It seemed to pass tests but the technician could not pass it because the check engine light did not come on when he first turned on the ignician.
Could the bulb be out?
Do they use bulbs?
Looked at getting to the panel but had no luck'
Last two times I have had to smog there always seems to be some kind of problem w/ the check engine light being on w/ nothing wrong.
Mechanics have told me this is an issue. Love my car and just want to get it registured and drive.
any help appreciated.

Go under the steering wheel and remove the plastic panel which is hold by 3 torx screws. When you remove it go under and you will see the back of instrument cluster.Replace the bulb and you're done.

It's would be a tiny space down there but it can be done.

Definitely possible.

Here is a write-up (with pictures) of how to remove the dash cover and get to the instrument cluster.

Check for codes in the under-hood modules as well - I believe the car will store a code for the "MIL" (check engine light) not working, and generally if there are any codes stored, they will not pass the car for inspection.

Here in NC though, they will pass any pre-96/pre-OBDII car as long as all the lights and everything work (regardless of a CEL or not) simply because they don't feel like testing older models for emissions and codes.

I bought a used 97 850 out of Chicago from some young guys that get them from dealer auctions. The speedo gear was not working and I changed that, but noticed 3 bulbs were pulled including the check engine light. Gone. They just turn and come out of the circuit board. There were a couple unused blanks I robbed some from. Check engine light was on of course. So I checked the codes and cleared them, and the light went out. Note there was no code for lamp removed. Luckily it stayed off because it had been on because the turbo wastegate tube had been disconnected and it was overboosting and cutting out. I had already fixed that. ABS lamp is still out and ABS does not work. Next project. Not sure what to do about that.

Thanks to those who replied. I will try from under the dash to replace bulb, if I cannot reach it, I guess I will remove dash.
My only concern is for passenger side air bag panel.

thanks again.

You don't need to take the whole dash off.

I replaced the trip computer earlier today and only needed to remove all the screws starting on the left over to the middle passenger air vent. You can get the instrument panel out It help to have another person hold the dash while I removed the instrument panel. There's write-ups with pictures here and on the volvospeed forum shows how to loosen enough of the dash off.

You can never really get there from under the dash. Removing the cluster from the top is not as big of a deal as you might think. The writeup for the odometer gear spells it out fairly well.

I just replace all of the idiot lights when the cluster is out (Except the service light which - even if it is good I stomp on it to make sure that it is dead and it can't come back).

I buy mine - a couple of 1 packs - from this place and they have worked fine:

It really is pretty easy to get the cluster out through the top.

If you have a second set of hands to help bow the dash, the cluster comes out easily. When I took the cluster out, I didn't have the extra hands. When I tried to get the cluster out, I caught a couple of the idiot lights and they popped off. I though they fell down into the dash, but luckily they didn't. Got my son to bow the dash to help put the cluster back in and had no problem.

Make sure you put something over the dash frame when you pull the cluster out or you will scratch the cluster window. The write-ups show you everything you need to know.
