Emissions Fuse Keeps Blowing!
Thanks in advance for your help.
We have a 99 Volvo S70. The car car has been diagnosed as having a problem that blows the emissions fuse. I took it to our mechanic and almost 500 bucks later the answer was "sorry" we could not find the problem. Your fuse is still blowing.
I put a new fuse in this AM and watched as my wife started the car. It blew immediately. Will it hurt the car to run it for a while until the problem is resolved? Any thoughts as to the root of the problem?
Thanks, Paul

Not sure how comfortable you are with a meter but its obvious you have a dead short. By working down the line you should be able to find the short. Actually - for $500 it shoudl have been found already unless the $500 was for the replacement of a component and not for trouble shooting.
Did the $500 go towards a compnent or just troubleshooting.
I would unplug all of the emissions devices first . Then turn the car on and see if it shorts. If it does you likely have a bare wire somewhere and need to use your meter to find which potion of the wire is shorting out. If you have no wire issues then procede to plug in each of the devices one at a time until the fues blows. Then you will know which one it is.
As far as doing damage while it is blown I would not be concerend. the real issue is if you have a wiring short and what other problems that could casue. Smoke fire etc.
If you are not comfortable with a meter and electrical troubleshooting then contact a local automotive electrician. This is a speciality among the automotive field . Most every mechanic can do basic troubleshooting but an issue like this needs a true auto electrician. There is usally a shop listed in the yellow pages. They will get it fixed but are pricey. Expect to pay apox $100 per hour. Make sure you agree to the figure and time to diagnose up front. I have done most 2 hour jobs in 30 minutes but some have taken 3-4 hours as the casue was unexpected or very hard to get to.

Thanks for your speedy advice. The dollars only included diagnostics and trouble shooting. After the initial expense I think I am ready to tackle it myself. I do not know where to begin with regards to where most of the components are. I have a manual for my 98 v70 that does not have good pics or information about emissions related components. Any ideas as to where to find a diagram (pictures are most helpful!) would be again really appreciated. Thanks, Paul

There used to be a web site in Poland that had scans of all of the factory electrical manuals but it went "Tango Uniform". I had downloaded all of them through '98 but not the '99 and there is a ton of differences. The Polish site was well publicized here so hopefully someone else downloaded the '99 manual and they can email it to you. The manuals tend to be about 2 Mb in file size so your email may or may not be able to deal with that.
