'98 S70, window,snroof,wndshld wiper, and radio failure

Postby IgotaLemon » Sat Apr 24, 2010 6:39 pm

I was driving when i cloud of smoke came out the driver side vent. simultaneously the radio, a/c, windhsield wipers, windows, sunroof, and interior dash lights all failed. I tried moving some fuses around but am getting nowwhere. anyone seen this before? i just bought the car 2 months ago and have already replaced the transmission for $2500. I'm hoping to get through this one a little cheaper. i appreciate any help you guys could give me

Also, the horn doesnt work and i need it driving through the streets of boston. Furthermore no check engine light has come on. i find that suprising considering smoke was produced

Perhaps you blew some fuses under the hood? The fuse boxes are right in front of the driver side. Check those out and replace the ones that are toast.

As a rule of thumb when I buy a used car, I always replace fuses, wipers, headlights, air filter, do an oil change and check other most-often-used things. That way I know for a fact that it's new and clean.

i checked all the fuses under the hood, only one was blown, i replaced it and the trip odometer came back to life, all the other fuses are working fine, i believe there is another fuse box or something internal i cannot get to from under the hood.

If you had smoke from a vent, I'd consider a bad blower motor and/or power stage for that motor.
The power stage makes the most sense and it IS installed inside the ductwork near the blower motor.
Both of these items are behind the glove box. That probably blew some fuses...And will again until repaired.

There are two fuse boxes under the hood.

The ECC system gets power from fuses 11A2, 11A6, 11A8 and 11B1 in the BIG fuse box.
The 11A fuses in the BIG fuse box are master fuses and usually feed more than one system through
sub fuses in locations 11B and 11C. So having several seemingly unrelated things stop working makes sense.
For the ECC, check fuses 11C5 and 11C10 in the box with all the small fuses.

i appreciate your advice. i opened up both fuse boxes and saw nothinging with the markings you described. In the adobe script it said it was a 98 x70, my car is a 98 S70 glt, im not sure if that changes anything, i appoligize for leaving out that information if relavant. the adobe file was damaged and did not open anyway. again i appreciate your efforts.

This is from my 98. I don't have all the relays listed there that 850's do or that are listed in the PDF diagrams above.

x70 is just shorthand for any C/S/V70 series car.
C(oupe or Convertible), S(edan), V(Wagon).

I don't know what happened to that PDF, so try let's this as a jpg:
