How to remove/replace sunroof?

Postby wheelsup » Thu Apr 29, 2010 2:51 am

Is there a walk thru that explains how to remove and/or replace the sunroof in its entirety? My parts car is being towed tomorrow and I wanted to get the sunroof out of it before it goes.

If all you want is the glass, it's easy. Pull away the plastic molding, and there are 4 screws holding it in on each side. The push up and back on it and it'll lift right out.

Ok found Ozark's writeup about gluing the material one, wondering if I can take apart the entire thing or just the glass? The sunroof on the parts car is in really good condition but mine is slightly rusted. I wanted to replace the entire thing, gears/motor included if possible?

Just saw your post. Yep, the glass replacement looks straight forward. I will definitely do that. Is the mechanism a PITA to get out?

Now that, I've never done, but it doesn't look too hard either.

Take out the screws for the overhead panel, pry out the lights, and the motor's right there. Supposedly there just 3 screws hold the motor in, but like anything else with one of these, I suspect it's more complicated than that.

I'll have to look at it tomorrow, I was thinking there were some tracks and stuff that it rides on/in. I think mine have gone bad because it takes a god aweful long time for it to slide backward.

I hope I can just hook the battery cables up to the battery and the sunroof will work too, the engine is out of the car so I don't know how the wiring harness works with hooking into the rest of the car.

Well I swapped the sunroof and the trim panel inside. Went pretty easy. Found out the reason mine pulls slowly backward is because it needs a little grease on the rails it seems. I'll try adding some and see if that helps. The donor car sunroof had zero rust and looks good. Glad I was able to swap it over, using Lee's writeup made it painless.

Do the sleds come out of the rails somehow so that one could be replaced? One of my sleds broke off at the rear where it screws onto that metal tray-ish cross-piece that the rear of the glass sits in (or apparently is supposed to sit it---the cross-piece was rattling around loose in my car).

Not sure I quite under stand what your question is. The parts car was towed away today but I left my cars sunroof off to clean it properly. I'll snap some pics for you tomorrow and post them up.

By sleds do you mean the part that moves or that is fixed to the car?
