V70 Wiper relay,where?

Postby tblo760 » Sat Dec 11, 2010 4:53 pm

My car is a V70 2.5ltr Diesel, year 2000,the front wipers, washers and headlight wipers are working all of the time the ignition is on.This happens regardless of which position the switch is in.The only way to turn them off,is to switch the ign off. The switch has been removed and tested, and it works perfectly. And with the switch disconnected the head light wipers work! So I'm suspecting the relay or a wiring short.Problem is,Where is the wiper relay? and how do I identify it.please help.

The wiper relay is located in the lower electrical unit which is directly below your fuse box. It is high on the firewall and you need to remove the lower dash panel (T-25 torx screws) to get to it. Since you folks drive on the wrong side of the road :D I can't tell you what side of the car it is on but it will, for sure, be directly below your fuse box.

While your at it swapping relays, consider taking the intermittant wipe relay out and swapping it for a VW relay number 99 as this will give you variable timed intermittant wipe, its a simple relay swap to get the extra functionality - Mike

I've tried swopping the relay, with both volvo and vw relays (which I know are good) but the problems still there.there must be a wiring fault somewhere, probably a back feed etc;it's going to be a problem finding it! without a wiring diagram.thanks anyway.

Do they stop with the relay removed?

No, the headlight wipers still run, I can't figure it out.

With the relay back in, unplug the headlight wiper motors one at a time.
See what happens...

Just to update, after MUCH diagnosing,I finally found the problem,as I previously said, the relay was substituted (4 times)and the switch checked out ok,wiring loom and wiper motor were also ok.After hours looking at the circuit diagram,it was obvious that there was a back feed from somewhere! The only way this could happen was if one of the parking switches was at fault. This is the only part of the circuit that has 12v when the ign is on and the wiper switch is off.And that was it!
The moving contact in one of the light wipe motors had siezed, this caused a feed back to the pump circuit and then to the main wiper motor via 31b and 53 (blue wire slow brush) these 2 terminals are bridged in the switch when the switch is in positions:-O,3 and 4. Problem solved,I've now given the car to my son and I'm keeping my 24 year old 760 V6 !
Thanks to all who offered help,Good luck, Terry.
