How to remove knee bolster in 1997 850 wagon

Postby islandguy » Wed Apr 20, 2011 3:10 am

Hello everyone,

This is my first post on this forum. I have just started to try my own wrenching on my 1997 850 wagon. The first three speeds don't work on the blower fan. I have searched the internet and found that it is likely the thermal fuse on the resistor pack. And this is normally caused by bad or dry bearings in the fan motor causing it to draw too much power, so I am going to remove the pack and motor to see what's wrong.

I have the glovy out and the lower panel off and I can see where everything is. I've read I'll need to remove the bolster to get the fan out and this looks to be the case for sure. I have removed the 3 well-discussed nuts that hold it on, but I can't get it out! It conflicts with the plastic side panels at each side and will not drop far enough to come out. The side panels seem to be part of the glove box frame and a lot of other stuff. So it looks like it would be difficault to remove them. Is there an easier way? Do the pros have any tricks?
Thanks a lot.

Glen...

You really have to wiggle the knee bolster out, you will feel the threads scrape against the wholes as you pull the bolster out.
Just make sure there are not four nuts, they do seem to be at an impossible angle, a flashlight and a bit of contorting will reveal all. Grab the bolster at the ends and wiggle down, it should then come free.

Thanks for your reply, Tailor,

There are 4 bolts but only three have nuts. I got all 4 bolts out of the holes but the bolster is then tighly jambed against the top edges of the side panels and the bolt ends are digging into the bolster so it won't move. I can't get at the ends as they are covered by the side panels. I'll pull and bash harder tomorrow. If it is supposed to come out without removing anything else I'll get it somehow.

Thanks again.

Glen..

The knee bolster disappears on the 1999 model. They put a shelf built into the panel in its place. Was something changed to allow the bolster to be removed? Sorry for hijacking.

I think on that side, you have to loosen the panel on the center console and drop it down a bit, and then that bolster will fall right down.

I don't remember, but it was pretty easy to get out of a 1998 S70 at least.

Thanks jblackburn, I'll see if I can get the console-side panel loose.

I pulled mine in the 850 a couple times. It's a miserable piece, but does come out without messing with the console. Keep working at it and you should be able to find a position where it will drop free. Be sure to keep track of the exact orientation as you remove it, so the reassembly will be easier.

I think the same Volvo engineer also moonlights designing these:

If you already pulled the glovebox, just reach in and smack the crap out of the bolster until it falls - it'll screech like a little old lady hittin' the nickel slots, but it'll move.

Thanks for all your help.

The bolster eventually came out by working from underneath, yanking hard on the inboard end and presto it was on the floor! No need to do anything to the side panels. Hopefully I will be able to get it back in!

Thanks again. I really appreciate this site and your help.
