My 1998 Volvo S70 non turbo will not start.

Postby robertcnorman » 19 Jun 2013, 16:01

I have bought a new battery, ignition coil, spark plugs (Bosch 7995 copper 0.28 gap), cap and rotor. None of this made a difference. The car has been sitting for 2 years in some guy's yard. I really need to figure out the problem so my wife does not have to walk to work. Any help will be much appreciated.

Replace the gas if it's been sitting for two years.

Also, can you hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds when you turn the key to position II?

I do hear a hum like something is getting ready to start. Not sure what that is. I will have to try again and pay close attention.

Sounds like the pump if it stops after a few seconds. Also, how does it sound when it cranks? If it sounds a little weak use a jump starter.

It sounds like everything works and wants to start but it just does not fire up. Maybe it is the gas. I'll have to walk to the store and put some in. I know that the guy who sold it to me put less than a half gallon in before I came to view it. But previosly it had not been gassed in 2 years.

Do you think that less than a half gallon is enough gas to gat it started? Or should I pour more gas in? I will listen for the pump to rule that out.

WHen it turns over does it sound like it is spinning REALLY fast or is there a normal cyclic noise like is normal while engine is cranking?

I am asking because I am suspicious of hanging valves and extended tappets (lifters) that are common to this engine family through 1999.

If it is cranking fast then hold accel pedal to floor and crank it over for a minute. THen do that again. Often it takes 2 plus minutes for the engine to start when it has the sticking valve issue. You must have a good fully charged battery to crank it over that long. DO not stop until you reach a minute. Every time you turn to start position a cranking enrichment occurs. 1 minute does not mean 15 secons 4 times, it is 1 minute continuous.

Jimmy57,

1 minute of continuous cranking will have the starter motor glowing red and may shorten it's life dramatically no?

To each their own, but I personally wouldn't lay on a starter for a full 60 seconds.

What if you pour a gallon or two of fuel in and shoot just a quick spray or two of starting fluid in the intake and then give it try? May the ether will help it along just enough to get it going?

Personally, it sounds odd, but if this were true starting fluid would not help because there would be no compression from the valves being stuck open. Although, if there were no compression the load on the starter motor would be minimal.

Ok. I just put gas in and turned it over twice. It still is not starting. I do hear a normal hum (Hopefully from the fuel pump) before I turn it over and it holds steady for at least a few minutes when I decide to turn the key. It sounds like it wants to start but just doesnt.
