2000 S80 2.9 Transmission Flush Questions....

Postby robby91 » Mon Oct 19, 2009 10:30 pm

Good afternoon everyone. I love reading this site.

My question is this:
I ordered the ATF flush kit from IPD and a case of Mobil 3309. After further review, it would appear I am not supposed to use 3309?

Is that the case? What can I or can't I use in the transmission? Would the 3309 hurt my car or help?

It's a 2.9L non-turbo 2000 S80. Can anyone tell me what type of transmission is in the vehicle?

I called the dealer and they couldn't tell me anything about the transmission or other types of fluids that would work in it. I am just getting a delay when shifting from park to drive during cold mornings and some other times. Is it worth it to do the flush? I got it with 60K miles on it and its now at almost 120K. Never been flushed. The dealer tried to scare me away from trying to flush. The fluid isn't black though. Sometimes when accelerating quickly it seems to slip gears a little. Should i just pony up and change the trans filter and everything as well?

I saw the other trans post about changing the filters. But i have read a bunch of forums and different people mention 3309 as viable and some don't. So confused.

Help! Thanks Much

I would flush it and change the filter too.
The guide is here:

You can't use 3309, that is only for 5 speeds I believe.

You can use anything equivalent to Dex/Merc III or IV.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the input. Its much appreciated. 1 more question though.

Do i have to use Dex III or IV? What about the Mobil 1 ATF Synethic of Mobil Dex VI. They both say they can work on old model requiring Dex.

Does it help or hurt to go that route??

Thanks again, i plan on changing the filter and the fluid tomorrow.

My understanding is that the latest Dexron i.e. VI is backward compatible and this is what is stated in this blurb from Mobil:

http://mobil1.ca/Canada-English/Files/P ... VI_ATF.pdf

I have sure there is no problem to use it. Actually even better product than was originally spec'd for the tranny.....

Be sure you do the flush in the manner that will replace the oil in the torque converter i.e. don't just drop the pan, drain and replace filter and then top up oil after buttoning up.

So, it looks like Mobil 1 synthetic ATF is all i can find around here. That is what i am going to go with.

As for the procedure. I don't have means to suck oil out of the dipstick as in the VADIS procedure that was posted. What i plan on doing is:
1. Drop the pan and replace the filter
2. Replace the lost ATF fluid into the dipstick after that (looks close to 7 qts)
3. Then use the IPD kit to flush out the rest of the system.

Should i run the engine for "x" amount of miles after replacing the filter before i flush the rest of the fluid out? Is it ok to simply drop the pan and replace the filter/lost ATF and then start flushing immediately following?

Robby,
Your insticnts are perfect. No reason to wait - actually its better not to.
Once you rop the pn and change the filter (and reassemble) you can fill the trans case with fluid, detach the return line and watch for bubbles or clean fluid. If you get bubbles first, turn off the car, put more trans fluid in and run again. This will flush it all. Once you get clean fluid you can stop and put the line back on.

Do not worry about switching through the gears until after your flush is done, you have refilled to the proper level, and now want to shift through reverse and drive to get any of the last bubbles out.

Check your level again, top up if needed, go for a drive (10 min) and recheck level again. Follow your instincts/thinking - you are on the right path.

Did the flush and filter change on wife's 2000 S80 2.9.
Filter available from oreilly, same as 2000 chevy impala, i've read.
dex III. worked good seems to shift smoother altough there was no trouble prior, preventive maint...
Only problem, made a mess when I removed the wrong line to flush from. Not even sure now which one ended being the correct one
From reading evidently they changed the plumbing.
