    Volvo Key replacement.

Help and Advice on S80 Volvo cars.

    Volvo Key replacement.

    Postby skjmank » 19 Dec 2006, 18:44

    Hi,

    I have a 2000 S80.

I know I can buy a blank volvo key on ebay but do I have to take it to dealer to make a copy? I heard that a new key costs $150+. I can do without the fob, the keyless entry remote as I am looking to create a spare.

    thanks!

2000 S80 T6 Premiere - keyless entry fob remote replacement

    Postby pbasch » 29 Dec 2006, 01:47

Genuine pain. I just got a used Volvo, owner had lost his fobs (rich guy - doesn't care). I find replacing it costs a fortune! $100 would be fine, but it comes to $260! And half of that is just for the key+PIN.

    Damn and blast!

Has anyone found any kind of workaround? Either a way to use a key without the PIN, or a cheap source of keys + PIN, or a way to program it yourself, or anything?

    Thanks for all the help!

I heard the same about a new key but I just went to a Volcvo dealership for a replacement (850 1994) key and they gave me two keys for $50 total! Both work.

wynnevolvo.com in Hampton Va was the place. Not sure what he did but he said I needed to have the car with me.

Your S80 key has a transponder in it that communicates through the antenna ring that lights up in your steering column. You can get a blank cut that'll unlock the door for cheap but it won't start the car without programming. There's no work-around. It's like that by design. All your car's data is stored on centralized Volvo corp servers. Your local stealership can't do it without them either, actually. So as much as I enjoy blaming car dealers for stuff the extortion is really from the top down. Might as well put the blame where it belongs, with the greedy Lear jet flying suits at corporate HQ.

I found a great parts website that sells NEW replacement keys, and NEW remotes. They have great prices.
    It is http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/ ... ryID=96057
They will cut a key to fit your car with the proper owner, vin information. You will still have to go to your local dealer to have the car programmed to the key. My local dealer here in Knoxville charges $79 to program a key or a new remote.
    Hope this helps.

Or bypass the reseller and buy directly from:
    http://www.parts.com/volvo/volvo-parts.cfm

Dealer here in Knoxville wanted to charge me $150 to put in a lower torque rod (part supplied by me). So I bought some ramps on sale at Advance Auto for $30, had the bolts I needed overnighted from Volvo of Richardson for $20 and it literally took me 30 minutes to replace the part.

Think I'll find someone else to program my key.

I don't think there is anyone else who can program it. If you find someone, please post their info up here so we all can use him.

Good luck, but I don't think you will find anyone else to program keys and remotes. The dealers service departments are the ones with the right equipment and programs for that. And the link you listed didn't have any replacement keys, or remotes.

I managed to drop my keys in the ocean, including my switchblade fob. Dealer quoted $415 plus taxes. Understandably, the incentive is there to search for alternatives. But after being enticed by apparently cheap replacements on eBay, and having looked at various forums, I've decided to not take the chance. Many posters advise against it; many of whom were burnt buying on eBay.

My dealer said that they can program the software but that the keys have to be laser cut at the factory.

I suppose one's damned either way. I even hired a diver to go down and look but the silt was 3 feet deep.
