Febi-Bilstein Spring Seat only lasted 50K

Volvo Parts talk... Which brands are bad, which are good? What Volvo part NEEDS to be OEM? What can we "cheat" on to save some money? OEM = "Original Equipment Manufacturer".

Febi-Bilstein Spring Seat only lasted 50K

Postby C@lvin » 20 Jul 2011, 17:34

Installed on passenger side of a 98 S70 at 160K and failed at about 210K.

I got it for its mid level price point and I considered them a reputable manufacturer.

This result appears to support the oft repeated mantra to stick to Volvo OEM spring seats.

You are lucky, I had a hard time getting a year from those (OEM) things in pot hole laden Chicago. Either use the XC90 part or else get the IPD HD versions. The last much longer.

RETRACTION/APOLOGY Febi-Bilstein Spring Seat only lasted 50K

Postby C@lvin » 28 Nov 2011, 17:12

My apologies to Febi-Bilstein!

I replaced my struts last week (98 S70 NA 218K) and I purchased a new Boge (Volvo) spring seat to install on one side because the top strut nut was spinning for about the last 8K miles and I assumed the Febi spring seat I previously installed had failed.

I discovered that the spring seat is just fine and actually looked to be in very good condition. The reason the top nut was spinning is that the cross shaped nut that goes on top of the spring seat had become loose.

The Febi-Bilstein spring seat is made in Germany, looks to be solidly contructed and (contrary to what I had thought) is still going strong at 58K miles.
