I just purchased a used 2000 Volvo s40. I need instructions for changing the transmission fluid on the vehicle as it has 200K miles. I am unable to remove the transmission fluid dip stick to check the level level as it seems to be stuck and unable to be pulled out of the dipstick retainer. Please advise if there is a special way of pulling out the dipstick as I do not wish to break anything by pulling it out improperly.
I was advised by the Volvo dealership service department not to change the transmission fluid "ever" at all or else "you might ruin the transmission of the car". I do not feel comfortable with that as the car has 200K miles and want to have it run for a longer period of time still. So I have decided nevertheless to go forward with changing the transmission fluid and filter on the car. .
Please advise if the vehicle require a special expensive fluid replacement or can I just use Dextron3 transmission fluid?
Does the vehicle have a transmission filter?
Does the transmission pan have a pan gasket or do I need to use a forma gasket material of some sort?
Please kindly assist me in this matter with step by step instructions possible?
I am on medical disability with very limited financial resources to have someone do it or me or for me to go and buy another car should the transmission go or if I break or ruin something.
2000 S40 is the last year for the 4-speed auto trans. Which means you can use dexron III fluid for the flush. There is no trans filter you can change. Make sure your car is in fact a 2000, in 2001 they changed to the newer 5-speed auto trans that uses the JWS 3309 fluid. 2000 S/V40 = 4-speed auto 2001- S/V40 = 5-speed auto
hi, I have a 2001 S40 1.9L Turbo. I'm so happy i found this site and that Walkthrough on the fliud change, I've been looking a long time for one.
So where My s40 is a 2001 I know i must buy the Special Trans Oil. Is this JWS 3309 oil Clear in colour?? I have 2 diffrent vovlo trans oils, one is clear and one is a golden colour. I want to change my trans fliud because she had a hard shift between 2nd and 3rd gear...and even more scary is when you put it in drive the Transmission "Bangs" into gear. I was told not to flush it so I put Lucas's Stop slip oil in her last year, it stoped the bad shifting but not the initial Bang. now that winter has come, the Lucas oil gets gummy below -0 Degres Celsius and car will not move below -11 deg. Should I use some sort of stronger cleaning type fluid for the flush that out, or just the Special vovlo oil? Thanks for the help.
