2001 volvo etm with new Sacer tps repalcement

    Postby bobsnow100 » 13 Sep 2012, 16:10

My 2001 xc70 turbo had the famous ETM failure. I purchased the Sacer contactless tps from a seller on ebay.
I installed it properly and had the volvo relaod the software. All electrical connections looked clean with no corrosion.
What happens now is it starts fine and runs fine but after it was driven and shutoff and then restarted, it stumbled and all lights on the dash lit up, engine light came on, also got the message of engine system sevice required . Drove home 5 miles in limp mode. Next morning, I pulled the codes and it had one, PO121, (Throttle /Pedal position sensor /switch A circut). Also the next morning the car started, revved and drove perfect. Anyone have any ideas what could be the problem?
My 1995 850 with over 300,000 miles never had the problems this car has had.

I have only heard of Xemodex ETM replacements...and they usually ship them to you already pre-loaded with any software settings your car already has.

Have you seen this post - viewtopic.php?f=12&t=38504 -- > Does that install really take as long as Yehuda says ?

So it was just one time? No way moisture could have gotten inside the etm or anything?

I partly know your aggravation, as my 2001 V70 has occasionally flaked out.

It is the same as the XeModex except you're installing the sacer unit instead of them. As far as time, I can pull my etm out in about 1/2 hour. Once out it took about an hour to take what needs to done to install the Sacer part. I do have soldering skills and equipment so it was not hard for me.
Normally you wouldn't have to have the dealer relaod the software, but I did because I took the original etm out when it failed over a year ago and installed a used 2nd one which just failed recently. The one I rebuilt was the original one, so it needed to be relaoded.
It saves you over a few hundred dollars by doing it yourself (that is if I can get ot to work right).and really wasn't too hard
As far as my problem, no I Just installed it 2 days ago, Problem was right away, No there was no water or corrosion at all. It is resealed so no water can get in.

Voltages? You need to measure them and compare to original... If it's too late for this test them anyway.... I think Yucka (Jack) is onto something

Looks like the info to the Sacer replacement is in that other thread I linked, with great detail and input from others. Ironically, my ETM JUST started failing yesterday. *@!&#)*&@! I would prefer Xemodex but I haven't decided yet/

Just looked on ebay again. I thought the sacer TPS's were $250+ on ebay, but now I see a seller dg34dg selling them for $165?! Since Sacer only has a 1 year/30 day warranty and dg34dg is selling from Israel, that may cheap enough to accept the risk.

Yes, I got mine from him on ebay (sent from Isreal). It did arrive quickly I must say
I guess I am going to have to test the voltages . I don't have the originalvoltages though.
I think with Xemodex , you can send your original etm and for $499 they will retrofit your original one.
So far I spent $165 for the sacer unit and $120 for the volvo reloading and it still is not working correct. I didn't know there could be this voltage issue. I thuought after putting the Sacer unit on my etm that I would have a working unit to just bolt in and not have to have problems like this after it was installed. Now I have to pull it out again and open up the unit for testing.
I am hoping this is the issue.

So far I've repaired 4 out of 6 successfully; the other 2 had board problems. I've also.had some DOAs and units which worked then went dead shortly afterwards but never your scenario.

I always use Vida to test the unit afterwards. The only other code reader I know of that can handle this system properly is the Autel EU702 . The resting output voltage of both sensor 1 & 2 should be closer to 1.4V. Even 0.2 of a volt difference can upset the circuit according to Jack. I was lucky with the 4 I've done not to have issues but the last one I repaired has a hesitation b/w gears which a new ETM solved (though it had no codes)

    Hope this helps.

After some playing around with VIDA, I've tested the ETM, etc.

However, my problem is apparently that the Accelerator Pedal PWM (via ETM) signal is at 0%, even though the Accelerator Pedal signal is around 8% otherwise. I popped out/in the ETM and ECM fuses and it's fine now. It doesn't sound like a good problem to have.

Updating the ETM software without updating ECM software has caused problems in the past.
