Fuel pump going out??

Postby meteg » 11 Sep 2008, 12:54

Hello as it might be remembered, I have been writing about that I doubt my fuel pump that it might be bad. this morning when I started my car, I realized it stalls and surges when idling and accelerating up to 2500 rpms. this happens when the car's engine is cold and hot it doesnt matter. should I think that the pump is on its way out? after 2500 rpms you cant feel it until you pay attention.. the car never had stalling or surging problem until this morning.

by the way the distributor cap, rotor, throttle position sensor, maf sensor,o2 sensor plugs were recently replaced. spark plug wires have alson been checked no problem were seen.

any comments?

Hate to ask you this because I know you've posted this before but what is your car? Model year too.

It could be the fuel pump but it could also be the fuel pump relay...or something else.

Dear Made in Japan,

the car is a '95 850 GLT(non turbo) with 180,000 miles on it.by the way there is no check engine light on so I believe this makes it more difficult to figure it out.

thanks

Yes it does...thanks for posting the year and model.
You might go over to the repair database and check out Lee's jumper method to eliminate the relay as the problem.

Dear Made in Japan,

thanks for the very fast reply, what I really wonder is do these fuel pumps have a life? like 10 yrs or the life of vehicle? for example Volvo says that for catalytic converters they should last the life of vehicle and they dont require replacement normally. is this a accurate approach? or just the dealer talk? I would also like to say that sometimes I hear several beeps like the old pc speaker sound coming rear of the car I believe this might be the pump too? is that possible? maybe this sounds like a conspiracy theory but this was another question on my mind, because this has happened 5 times within a year, you can hear it clearly if you are driving late at night with no radio in a countryside road with no traffic.

I will do the jumper test in the morning..

thanks

thanks

I know nothing about the "beep" from the rear speakers...never heard of it, sorry. Let us know about the relay...that's where I would start and then if you determine that it's your fuel pump we'll have to dig deeper. Btw, when you turn the key to position II, do you hear the pump engage at the back of the car? You can also check your fuel pressure at the end of the fuel rail at the shrader valve with a fuel pressure gauge- it should read about 40 psi with the key engaged.

My experience with fuel pump failures is that it is pretty much all or nothing. It works fine and then it quits.

On a couple of occasions I have temporarily revived the pump for one more run home buy beating on the bottom of the fuel tank with a stick or by kicking it.

I do think Luketrash had an issue with his fuel pump where it started to come apart and it would run but the pressure was consistently low.

None of those should cause a surging issue if the fuel pressure regulator is working properly.

Dear Made in Japan,

there has been a misunderstanding because I couldnt explain.. the sound which sounds like a beep comes from the trunk not the speakers.. I'm getting prepared to sleep but before I do I disconnected the negative terminal of battery. I will leave the car with the negative terminal disconnected tonight and will hook it back in the morning and see how it runs.. I'm unable to find a pressure gauge for the fuel pump because I'm now in the summerhouse at seaside far from the city. so it looks like I will hook the battery negative back in the morning and see how the car runs if it fails again then I will not run the car again until the new fuel pump arrives.. (I have ordered one from E-bay) it might take 15 days for it to arrive.

so many thanks for your attention and sorry for posting the title over and over again..

I will let everyone what happens tomorrow..

Problem solved

Postby meteg » 13 Sep 2008, 08:11

the stalling and surging problem of the car has beeen solved. the problem appears to that some of the electrical components got wet in the last car wash and because of this the engine has been irregularly running and stalling. by this morning there is no more stalling or surging problem.. still the fuel pump has to be changed I believe..

regards
