Mystery (to me) squeaking

Mystery (to me) squeaking

I have a 2000 S70 Turbo with 135K. It squeaks loudly driving over cracks, small bumps etc. It sounds to me like rubber flexing. I haven't isolated it front or rear, it sounds like everywhere. On smooth roads and at higher speeds I don't hear it. I've done a lot of work in the last few months, thanks to this forum and particularly cn90's tutorials. Thank you everyone!

Searching here and elsewhere mostly brings up dashboard and suspension squeaks. I don't think this is the dashboard (I fixed a glovebox squeak). I'm hoping for suggestions where to look next. In the last few months I've replaced:

Front struts/mounts/seats/coil springs/control arms/stabilizer links/inner and outer tie rods

Rear shocks/mounts

Radiator/hoses/thermostat

Timing belt/idler/tensioner/water pump

Serpentine belt/tensioner/alternator

Engine mounts - upper mount (top of engine) and right hand mount (under crank pulley)

Front brake pads/rotor/Rear brake caliper/pads/rotor

Rear exhaust pipe hanger

Other Volvos (wagons) I've had developed minor body squeaks in a few years, but nothing like this. This is the longest I've kept a Volvo in many years. The doors seem tight and the rubber door seals are treated with gummi pflege and in good condition.

Not replaced:
Rear end suspension link
Lower front and rear (round) mounts
Lower front torque rod (steady bar)
Upper torque rod mount (on firewall)

Suggestion: with truck closed, push hard and rock the car. Same with front.
My opinion, your list of things not replace will be your source, 11 year old parts in four seasons, its time for replacement. i have to do the same.

Sway bar rubber bushings are toast?
I also changed most of the suspension and still need to deal with the sway bar

Me too; I have new Polys bushings for T-5 sport Factory sway bars, but not installed yet. When I get most all of my suspension parts, I'll decide where to get new IPD sway bar, or install new poly bushings in factory.

Well, the problem is that the sway bar is "one piece" with vulcanized rubber bushings.
That leaves either an aftermarket sway bar, a new complete bar, or get inventive ( im doing the third option)
Im dealing with the sway bar when I get my new arms, (this week)
Let you know if I get rid of the clunk..

Juan - rocking front and rear, no sound.

elchopperfreak - my understanding is that worn sway bar bushings give you a clunk over bumps, not a squeak.

Replacing the suspension components has eliminated the rattles and clunks, and replacing the upper engine mount got rid of the chirp when shifting in and out of Park. The car feels pretty tight, but it squeaks on relatively small movements. I agree it would be good to do all the mounts and deal with the swaybar, I'm just trying to deal with the most pressing stuff first.

I suspect defective swaybar bushings, a quick test is to spray a little bit of WD-40 right at the bushing itself.
If the squeak goes away, then it confirms the diagnosis.

As others already said, the bushing is vulcanized into the sway bar itself, kind of a dumb engineering.
Volvo says replace replace the whole sway bar, which is EXPENSIVE!
In many other cars, the bushing can be easily replaced as it is a seprate item, not vulcanized.

However, there is a fellow on volvoforums ("ddrewyor") that found the swaybar bushing, not OEM but made by "Scan Tech". Give this a try and report back.

Mystery solved! Constant squeak turned out to be a dented front fender moving at the point it's bolted to the body under the hood.
It had gotten worse since I posted my question; at first only happened when moving. Eventually I could hear it when closing a door. What sounded to me like rubber squeaking was actually metal on metal. Loosening the four bolts and retightening has stopped the noise for now. I was saving the body shop work until I had the car in good mechanical condition. Next on the list were front stabilizer bushings or stabilizer, and the remaining engine mounts. At 135K they maybe should be replaced anyway, but they don't seem to be the problem this time.

I've had this '93 850 for 3 months now, and I thuoght I was done with all the squeeks, but I occasionally heard one that I could'nt locate. And it would go away, only to return. I finally nailed it one day while reaching for something in the back seat with the engine off. It was the shock in the drivers seat. I should have realized it when it showed up after I replace the seat.
So, I guess, try sitting in the car with the engine off and no other noise and bounce around a little. Who knows?
