PNP Alignment without the tool There is a good write-up on Volvospeed with pictures on how to replace your PNP Switch but what's missing is how to align it once you get it in. The alignment tool (apparently only sold by Volvo) is often times hard to acquire even from a dealer and really an unnecessary expense. This write-up gives you an easy to follow step-by-step way to make sure the new PNP switch you install is properly aligned for your car! Comments are welcome in the thread. MIJ
maf problems Thank you for the time a effort you have put forth. Many people would suffer headaches without you including myself.
Fuel Pump Removal Made Easy Thanks Luketrash for your write-up on going to the salvage yard to get a fuel pump out of a 850 wagon. This would apply to wagons up through '00 as well.
Drive Cycle For Readiness I noticed today when someone posted about their readiness codes that this is not in the repair database, so I'm adding it. Basically, if you go for emissions testing and they scan your computer and find that your car is not ready although there are no diagnostic trouble codes (DTC's) or check engine light, you'll fail the inspection. A regular OBD-II scanner will also tell you that your readiness codes are not set. Volvo gives us a specific Drive Cycle that has to be done at least twice to set these codes so that you will pass inspection. In this thread, you'll find those instructions.
Adding an MP3 plug-in to your Radio Thanks to lewismug we now have a write-up on how to add a input jack to your SC series car stereo's!
Rear Camshaft Seal Replacement If you have an oil leak that appears to be leaking down as if it's the Rear Main Seal, but it's not and has you stumped it might be your rear camshaft seal. This write-up with pictures explains what you have to do to fix this leak at very minimal cost. Don't take a mechanic's or dealer's word for it that you need your rear main seal replaced at mega bucks when this $10 fix might be all that it is. Thanks lewismug for the great write-up!
PCV cleaning/replacement If you have positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) bogging down your ride indicated by oil blow-by on your oil filler hose or smoke coming from your dipstick tube, now is the time to replace or at least clean your PCV system. Without proper maintenance, you could be damaging your engine seals without knowing it. Here is a write-up from another site, but really excellent with pictures! Regards, MIJ
Alternator replacement Thanks to lewismug for instructions on how to replace the alternator in your 850 or pre-'01 70 series cars.
Replacing an 850 Transmission Here is phoenix_iii's saga and resolution when he transferred a AW/50-42 transmission into his '95 850 Turbo from a '96. Although the transmissions were the same number he ran into a different wiring, especially the speed sensor. If you're having to replace a transmission in your 850, this thread could be valuable. Thanks, phoenix_iii for hanging in there and finally figuring out all the kinks!
Fuel Pump Relay Repair Comprehensive how-to repair the troublesome fuel pump relay.
Interior bulb designation, sizes, etc. Here is a thread that discusses and has a link in it about the different light bulbs used inside 850/70 series cars. I hope it stays up. The link to S.S. should be there for awhile but as threads get old and pushed into the archives, the links tend to change. If this happens I'll try to update this entry into the database. Regards, MIJ
Swapping seats from '97 to '94 Thanks to Tailor we now have a write up with the swapping of a '97 850 into a '94. The '97 has SIPS while the '94 doesn't so this is especially interesting and may benefit those with worn out early 850 seats when they can only find later model 850 seats for a replacement.
Ignition/Lock Cylinder Replacement Thanks to "mom" for this one! Upon investigation of his no-start condition on his 2000 S70, "mom" found that it was his ignition switch/ lock cylinder. T-stat, Timing Belt Change Costs Since the car is in the shop and the timing belt needed to be reset and was cracked they suggested to replace it and my water pump which was slightly leaking. I agreed. $600 dollars for that repair in case anyone is wondering. Well worth it in my opinion.
Get the Keyless Entry Number Hello, this holiday weekend I pulled the glove box out of the dash to get a look at the keyless remote "black" box. The only box that I saw was located on the right hand side of the glove box, mounted vertically.
Grease on CV joint 2002 V70XC There should be no grease on the outside of the joint. Usually this is a sign that the boot is torn and leaking. It probably needs a new boot. Any clicking noise when you're turning? If so, worst case is that you may even be in for a axle shaft replacement.

Squeaky dash - solution Thanks you, yankinwaoz! Good write up on how to tighten up your dash. Although this doesn't say V70 it is actually for a V70 but will work for most pre-'01 Volvo's. (not sure of the setup on the newer P2 cars).
Replacing the #2 Shift Solenoid Ever have the flashing arrow, stuck in 3rd, etc. PNP, right? Not so fast. According to many here, I was foolish in questioning that as I also had a code 755 (#2 Shift Solenoid). Changed the PNP, no effect. Changed the #2 Shift Solenoid and all is well. Here is the description of how to change this solenoid. Thanks vizslak7 !!

More Buyer's Advice 850 and S70 The 850 and the earlier S70s are functionally nearly identical. The interior on the S-70 is a bit more refined but, particularly on the 98 models, the door panel covers tend to shrink and come unglued...

Windshield Noise/Howling What I discoverd was the rubber weather stripping that goes around the windshield had seperated by about 6 inches along the top of the windshield over the driver's side. Buy a Volvo 850 or Volvo S70? I'm fonder of the S70's interior, but the 850's does have a certain charm, and even if the boost guage isn't marked, it's still nice to have, which is an advantage of the 850.

Fuel Pump Relay Repair Fuel pump relay failures are a common and frustrating occurrence with the Volvo 850. A failure effectively immobilizes the car and many owners, myself included, carry a spare relay in the car so as to not get stuck on the road miles away from any Volvo dealer. The relays are unique to Volvo and cannot be purchased from a standard auto parts store. Read about the repair with pictures...less than $3.00 in parts if you're willing to take the time to do this repair!

The solder joints in the relay itself tends to shrink and crack rending the relay non-funcional. You can avoid buing the expensive Volvo fuel pump relay if you follow the instructions here!

850 sunroof headliner repair My sunroof shade headliner material had come unglued to the point where it just hung down and hit me in the head if I closed the sunroof shade. Being creative, I shoved the whole mess back into the cover slot and kept the shade open. I think this may be a common problem with many Volvos since I see many of them in this condition. This is largely a duplication of a Bay 13 post but I picked up a few more tricks and couple of got-ya’s.
850 seat cushion foam replacement The drivers seat in my 850 had broken down to the point where it was very uncomfortable to drive. I investigated having the bottom seat cushion foam replaced at a local upholstery shop and found that the foam cushion itself sells for $250.00 without the heater element and, with labor, the estimate was “at least $600”. As luck would have it I found a guy parting out a couple of 850s and bought the passenger side foam from him for - I think - $35.00 shipped. Subsequent to that purchase I found that my drivers side seat heater had burned out as well and was pleasantly surprised when the cushion came with a good working heater pad. I got the passengers side since the drivers side foam and the passengers side foam is identical. I figured that the passengers side would have the less wear than the drivers side. This isn’t a huge job but it requires some patience.

Volvo V70 and S70 PNP Alignment without the tool There is a good write-up on Volvospeed with pictures on how to replace your PNP Switch but what's missing is how to align it once you get it in. MIJ
Volvo V70 and S70 Fuel Pump Removal Made Easy Thanks Luketrash for your write-up on going to the salvage yard to get a fuel pump out of a 850 wagon. This would apply to wagons up through '00 as well.
Volvo V70 and S70 Drive Cycle For Readiness I noticed today when someone posted about their readiness codes that this is not in the repair database, so I'm adding it.

Volvo V70 and S70 Rear Camshaft Seal Replacement If you have an oil leak that appears to be leaking down as if it's the Rear Main Seal, but it's not and has you stumped it might be your rear camshaft seal. This write-up with pictures explains what you have to do to fix this leak at very minimal cost. Don't take a mechanic's or dealer's word for it that you need your rear main seal replaced at mega bucks when this $10 fix might be all that it is. Thanks lewismug for the great write-up!
Volvo V70 and S70 PCV cleaning/replacement If you have positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) bogging down your ride indicated by oil blow-by on your oil filler hose or smoke coming from your dipstick tube, now is the time to replace or at least clean your PCV system. Without proper maintenance, you could be damaging your engine seals without knowing it. Here is a write-up from another site, but really excellent with pictures! Regards, MIJ

Volvo V70 and S70 Interior bulb designation, sizes, etc. Here is a thread that discusses and has a link in it about the different light bulbs used inside 850/70 series cars. I hope it stays up. Regards, MIJ
