Hello Neil. I work for a volvo dealer in England. We do replace oil filler cap seals because they do perish with time. If you have fitted a new seal and it is still leaking alot of oil the i would check the crank case ventilation is all clear because if it is blocked then it will force oil from the filler cap. In this country we are now advised to remove what we call the flame trap. It is mounted in a pipe joining the air intake hose. This will help it breath alot better. I would be suprised if it is rings as these engines are very good and would have a fair amount of blue smoke. I would check this first as it is alot cheaper. Hope this is of help. Let me know how you get on.
