function of air pump. the function of the air pump which is electric and located on the front under the battery (850-sv70)above the exaust and to the side if equip 960-sv90 is to add more air (cold start only) to further combustion in the exaust manifold helps the cat converter come on line and cleans emmissions this is the reason you won't notice any driveability concerns because it happens after combustion in my state you will not be able to smog the car but untill it's fixed it's ok to drive the sas (secondary air system)valve is usulally the problem allowing water from the exaust(normal from combustion) to back up into the pump water destroys the electric pump.
