I have an '89 240DL, which would stall out on occasion. If I let it sit for a time I could start it up again, just as you described. A Volvo serviceman recommended that the throttle body be taken off and cleaned, which it was and the car drove perfectly, again. I can tell when the throttle body needs to be cleaned --- about every 10,000 to 15,000 miles (on my older Volvo) and supposedly about every 30,000 miles on newer models, by the feeling of a "mini stall" occuring at times while I'm driving.
