Is the "smoke" steam (blown head gasket) or actually smoke? If it's smoke I'd be looking at the turbo seals first, but the "shudder" doesn't fit with that unless perhaps the oil from the blown seal has crapped out the O2 sensor. Get the code from the check engine light and see what it's telling you. If it says O2 sensor....
