In Reply to: 850 rear oil seal replacement posted by Klint on September 03, 2002 at 07:40:48:

I have a 1996 850 GLT Wagon that I had to have the rear oil seal replaced. The mechanic said that with the engine and transmission combination of the car, the engine had to come out and that the transmission only could not be removed. I do not remember the details now, but I learned an important maintenance item that causes this seal to start leaking. The shop I went to specializes in Volvo and they said that the oil breather in the air cleaner housing should be cleaned with every oil change. If this breather clogs, it can cause pressure to build up in your engine and cause an oil seal (crankshaft or camshaft, for example)to begin leaking. I did find that the oil breather was at least partially cloged on my Volvo.
