Q: “The wipers on my 1994 Volvo 855 have been getting slower and slower with time. A few squirts of lubricant on the exposed shaft helped a bit, but was not a permanent solution. What can I do to make this a longer-lasting fix?”

A: Here’s a few pics and procedure for doing a more thorough repair:

Fix for slow wipers

This common Volvo problem is related to how the wipers are mounted to a shaft with a bushing. Over time the bushing becomes dry and corrodes, and this makes the wipers move slower. Left unattended, they will eventually stop moving at all.

Another issue may be that the motor has failed, but that’s not common. To check the motor, disconnect it from the ball joint and turn on the wiper switch to see if it runs.

If it runs, it is the bearing seizing. Take out the shafts and buff them carefully with a fine-grit sandpaper. Then lubricate with waterproof grease.
