I was just in the garage and checked with a magnet ('94 T5) - the crossover pipe seems to be aluminum. The one at the top of intercooler is plastic.

Probably the t/o bearing is taking a dump. There is no pilot bearing on these things, so it's not that. T/O bearings tend to quiet down when under pressure.
