Re: New England Winter for a Desert Volvo?
Only rust spots on my Volvo are from rock chips. She lived in New England most her life before I got her and she's still mint. Doesn't hurt to crawl under once and a while and treat spots for rust, if you can find any. These cars aren't rust buckets. As mentioned above, get an antifreeze tester and ...

Re: New England Winter for a Desert Volvo?
They're well protected against rust from the factory so unless the desert has blown the original treatment away it should be fine. Get proper winter tyres. Treat all rubber seals so they don't get stuck when it freezes. Check antifreeze and make sure you've got wiper fluid that won't freeze. My veh...

Re: New England Winter for a Desert Volvo?
Basic road safety 101 is keep the best tyres in the rear so the car doesn't unexpectedly oversteer, especially if braking hard. Each to his or her own but it's really terrible and dangerous advice to give someone else. As I said, I have never had a problem nor noticed a difference. Terrible and dan...

Re: New England Winter for a Desert Volvo?
I live where the roads are salted heavily, and many folks here swear by an annual application of Fluid Film spray-on corrosion protection. It is lanolin-based and clings very well to coated surfaces. I spray my own cars each year, and my fleet is pretty aged. The Volvos and the BMW are holding up ve...

Re: New England Winter for a Desert Volvo?
It would be a shame to drive a nice 1995 850 in salt. If it was me I would buy a cheap winter car with snow tires to use and store the Classic Volvo each winter. In the past we had a house in South Orange, New Jersey which had a winter 4X4 Chevrolet in the garage. 4X4 was needed to get up the hill t...

Re: New England Winter for a Desert Volvo?
Up here in Canada it is illegal to only run 2 winter tires on the driven wheels. People do, but it is stupid to do so, especially where ice is concerned. Change the windshield washer fluid prior to hitting cold/freezing weather. If not you can crack the pump bodies. Good anti-freeze as the guys have...

Re: New England Winter for a Desert Volvo?
Spray a cloth with your preferred treatment then wipe the door seals, no over spray. I put the four snow tires on my '94 850 because it has over 300,000 miles and keep the newer ones parked.

Re: New England Winter for a Desert Volvo?
Add concentrate to get it to a decent freezing point quicker without having to empty it. Not sure what you meant by this.... concentrate of what? Wiper fluid. At least over here they usually sell in -18 C ready to use or concentrate that does -30 C in a 1:1 water mix. Adding just a liter or so of t...
