Re: Intermittent rough cold start 04 XC70
Cold start only issue? Is it an issue after the engine has run a while and then been left off? I used to have this on a p80 v70 on one cylinder due to a slightly breached head gasket. Random misfires are interesting (assuming you mean to all cylinders) as it would likely point to a fuel pressure iss...

Re: Intermittent rough cold start 04 XC70
It does sound like coolant seeping into cyls after it cools down, rough start due to moisture , after it warms up the moisture clears out. Same thing happened to my old volvo 740, the definitive test was block tester fluid to detect exh gas in the coolant. I would do that first to eliminate the wors...

Re: Intermittent rough cold start 04 XC70
if you open the coolant bottle when the enginer is stone cold it should not be under pressure, if it releases pressure when opened cold thats a sign for leaky head gasket, not definitive but a red flag.

Re: Intermittent rough cold start 04 XC70
Take a good look at all your vacuum lines and induction hoses. They all need to be tight and clamped On a rough running car, all those codes are meaningless chatter turbo valve has nothing to do with idle , so that’s not the cold start fault. You will need tools and dirty gloves to inspect vacuum/in...

Re: Gasket brand selection for head gasket reseal 03 XC70
Here's my mantra on head work parts > Must be Volvo: head gasket, valve stem seals, spark plug tube seals > Go with Corteco: cam seals > Victor Reinz: most other seals and gaskets Here's most of what I bought for the 07 XC70 head work, including cooling hoses and timing parts, (NOT guaranteed to be ...

Re: Intermittent rough cold start 04 XC70
If you vape or smoke there's a free way to test at least the intake vacuum lines. Pop the line off of the intake nipple. Take a big puff and blow it down that line. Do it a bunch of times and eventually you'll have enough smoke in there for it to be coming out of any holes in the lines. Thats how I ...

Re: Intermittent rough cold start 04 XC70
the block tester fluid is quite definitive for gasket failure.
Not as serious as belt failure that crashes the valves.

Re: Camshaft Locking Tool 04 XC70
I am preparing to replace my head gasket and am not sure which camshaft locking tool set to get. I'm leaning towards IPD - 121804 kit but it looks like the same no name kit I see on Ebay for ⅓ the price. I may only use it 1 time, so don't want to pay too much or get a shoddy tool. I'd appreciate an...
