Throw out bearing makes sense and although I have not owned a manual trans car for close to 20 years, the throw out bearing makes sense as a 'while you are in there' part. I have read the slave cylinder can be an issue. What tends to go wrong with them....

Pull the cover of the ECU box located in the passenger side, front corner of the engine compartment. Take a picture and post it here.

The 2.5 20V should be B5254S, which has the LH 3.2 Jetronic. I don't think there was a 2.5 20V with Motronic 4.3 - the first ones were the 2.5T with Motronic 4.4. Some 1996 models probably has Motronic, but it'll be 4.4, not 4.3.
