Replacing the cv joint boot I got lucky and the cv joint was easy to get off the shaft. So I didn’t pull the axle at all.
Getting the bearings back was a puzzle. Until I found a mention of using grease instead of doing it dry.

Yes it has been a challenge for those out east in Canada and many US states with this latest arctic blast. Try to stay warm and plan for even those short trips if you have to make them. While it is likely the units are bad as you say, have you made sure the wiring harness is good where it runs from the roof into the tailgate on the LH hinge? It is common at this age for wires to break in that harness. Do you have a part number for the latch? 850 wagons' are getting rare in the junk...
