Re: Headlght wiper

Hardest part is opening them up. If I recall the 850 ones have a longer shaft due to the extra trim under the headlight. They also had metal cogs on the end of the wiper arm as seen in your pictures. Later ones had plastic cogs which could break, but rotating them 180 degrees they usually were good ...

Restoration: I Bought the Cheapest Running 98 V70 T5M (2023)

I'm back from the dead. After suffering the tragic loss of my beloved 324k mi 98 S70 T5M to a rod knock, I did the right thing and went on Marketplace to buy the closest Volvo V70. To my delight it was a tuned 98 V70 T5 with a factory installed M56 and some other under the hood goodies (R manifolds,...

Re: 850r failing emissions miserably (HC and CO)

One more thing: if you are not getting full boost, you might have a badly worn turbo, split intercooler hoses (check carefully, they might look okay if not boosting) or a shot intercooler. Usually it's the hoses, but I had a badly worn turbo in my 94 and you could smell the overly rich exhaust gases...

Re: 850r failing emissions miserably (HC and CO)

Tips from my side: Always record your fuel consumption. I know it is some work, but it pays off. Note displayed values can be incorrect, I always note distance and fuel consumed. If you are using excessive fuel then it is not running right. I was able to catch and diagnose some problems early becau...

Re: 850r failing emissions miserably (HC and CO)

Just an update fo completeness and future people searching (and maybe some more info) Last night I check the last stored fuel trims on my obd scanner. STFT == 0.0 LTFT == 14.2 (this seems very high) I also poked around under the hood in the dark and cold at some vacuum lines, but couldn't see much ...

Rust prevention

Scotland isn't known for having the warmest or driest climate, in fact if I look out the window and the sun is shining there is every chance it will be pouring down or even snowing ten minutes later. Therefore the dreaded tin worm is a major problem not only in Scotland but also in the rest of the U...

Re: 850r failing emissions miserably (HC and CO)

The best route, in your situation JayPea, is to replace the vacuum lines (and then a Stage 0 ). The reason this step is different than other broken-car scenarios is that you have to replace this vacuum stuff every 10 years anyway. Sometimes less, sometimes more. But yes, DO throw parts at it... vacu...

850 sump splash guard

The 850 petrol engines never came with a sump splash guard although the diesel engines were all fitted with them. This got me thinking that having one installed might be a good way to help keep the engine bay cleaner and after a bit of searching I found the they were still available direct from Volv...

Re: What did you do to your Volvo today?

I always mark the gears before removing them to try to prevent having to do this. Easy to be smart after you learn a lesson!

Might be worth considering testing off the car with a battery and a couple of leads to get you in the rough area before reassembling the cases.

Re: 850r failing emissions miserably (HC and CO)

Well apart from the money, if you don't know how old they are, it is a worthwhile Stage 0 service to replace the O2 sensors, at least the upstream one if not both. Make sure they are genuine Bosch parts and not copies. So careful where you source them from! If you don't have any junkyards near you w...
