Is it necessary to smooth out the front caliper brackets so that the brake pads slide smoothly on them? If so, what's the best way? Every brake job, required. Insurance companies don't give "book value" they use comparable sales. Will be tough to find comparables though for a 2000. They'll give you more than a thousand, heck two years ago they gave me $3k for a 96 850 wagon. I said good buy and bought it back for $250.
