You have spark at the plugs, BUT do you have spark at the proper time in the cycle? This has a distributor, right? Did you remove the distributor doing work? Try using an old timing light to check proper spark timing. Distributors can be tricky to get proper spark timing.

Your speedometer is likely electric with a magnetic speed sensor at the rear differential housing. As an electrical device, any bare wire will short the signal. The clutch system will not have a pump to assist the operation. Only foot pressure on the pedal is used to operate the cylinder at the clutch.
