I believe the 'snout' referred to is the hose barbs that better plastic radiators have fitted with an internal metal ring to reduce crushing when the hose clamp is over tightened.
Poor sentence structure, but I will not change it now.

I drove my 1987 Volvo 244 today. It started right up after sitting a few weeks. The fuel gauge partly worked, which is better than the last drive. It was used to haul another 5 gallons of waste oil for recycling.

Several general thoughts here, although I am not familiar with the 144E. Do you have an electrical schematic or Volvo shop manual? Original Volvo shop manuals for 240 series were very detailed. If the 144E has the Bosch Mechanical fuel injection system, the early 240 shop manuals may be instructive....

Intermittent starts are hard to diagnose. I would start by connecting a fuel pressure gauge that you can leave on the car. When it does not start, see if you have fuel pressure. If it starts, note the fuel pressure when running. Try some starter fluid in the air intake if you have a no start and see...
