Well, I guess it is easier to get a FWD tranny then. I will keep my eyes open for a manual donor car which will gladly donate the clutch pedal assembly as well.

If the head gasket only leaks on the outside of the block I'd leave it as it is unless it leaks really badly. As long as water and oil don't mix, you should be fine. Don't worry about the cams. You could always swap in NA cams if the Turbo cams really are shot. They will add some extra performance as a bonus.

If I remeber correctly this is how the PS pump failure felt on my 72 Lincoln Continental.
Replacing the PS pump is not alot of work - if it is the pump.
I wouldn't drive a power steering car w/o ppwer steering. But it might work.
