Try smoking the intake. A common mistake is when refitting the intake is to trap the hose clamp for the PCV hose between the RH end (when viewed from the front of the car) between the intake and gasket. What do you mean, there are still many useful parts on that car! Rear lights, front crash bar, rear bumper guides, hood hinges, rear side windows........!

I'm trying to remember on the 98 (I'm assuming you just used the block and head from the 94 and the intake/exhaust manifolds from the 98), there is a pipe that runs under the intake manifold.
