Re: '98 Volvo C70 2.5T atmospheric pressure sensor and high consumption
The turbo bypass valve has a rubber diaphragm in it. You also have a TCV (turbo control valve) on a turbo engine. Both can and do fail with age. There is a small rubber pipe that runs from the TCV (usually mounted on the side of the airbox near the MAF. One of the small pipe runs down to the TBV. Re...

Re: '98 Volvo C70 2.5T atmospheric pressure sensor and high consumption
If it is the hose from the TCV as you say to the bottom of the TBV it can be done from the top but is fiddly. A small mirror on a stick is handy to see what needs done, The pipe uses a spring clamp on it and the job needs to be done by feel.

Re: '98 Volvo C70 2.5T atmospheric pressure sensor and high consumption
That small hose and nipple are part of the PCV system, it is infamous for the hose to fall off due to various reasons including just rotting away. Almost always throws a p0172 however, with the car otherwise running pretty normally. Hopefully there aren't other hoses or parts disconnected. Or maybe ...

Re: ['98 C70 B5254T] blown head gasket, cracked block or s.th. completely else?
If you had a cracked block, it would be pretty obvious. At least one cylinder would have no compression. IMHO, this does not scream head gasket leak based on what you described. Based on the condition of the cap, I would suggest replacing all the radiator cooling hoses. Check the turbo for coolant l...

Re: ['98 C70 B5254T] blown head gasket, cracked block or s.th. completely else?
For mystery leaks the favorites for me are on turbo engines (and where appropriate for non-turbos): 1) 'O' ring seals for the heater core. Does the windshield feel greasy above the air vents? 2) The heater core itself? A small leak may just evaporate, but you may smell a sickly sweet smell when driv...

Re: Overhaul of shock absorbers and steering parts
Some of these things you might not know to replace until you take it apart. The strut mounts, or "roller bearings," can be reused if they're turning smoothly. I just reused them after replacing the shocks in my 2000 V70. I'm going to replace them in my '98 V70 because they're looking like ...

Re: Is it possible to identify the steering rack by its visual appearance?
Look at the grease cap on the bottom of the steering gear. TRW rack has a smooth / rounded cap, SMI sack has a hexagonal end like a large raised nut.
