Never owned a Volvo and now considering purchasing a new 2005 XC70. Test drove a 2004 and there was a grinding noise when braking. It seemed odd that a 2004 used as a loaner/test drive car would all ready have a brake problem. I really like the car and apparently can get 4-5K off sticker. I have big questions about problems with Volvo's and service issues people have had. Am I just reading about the vocal minority or are there real problems with these cars?
Thanks in advance.

The grinding noise you heard is probably the axle. The haldex AWD system is very picky about tires and after speaking with my indy about the issue last night, he seems to think that people mismatching tires and tire pressures is a big cause of the problem. Even a difference of 3 psi b/t tires can cause problems in the long run. When you buy a new car however, you'll be getting the warranty that comes with it, so I think you can rest pretty easily with that.

I took delivery of my 2005 xc70 a few months ago and was very happy with the quality and drive of the car. I know several people who have 2004 xc70 and they absolutely love them!

I have a 2004 XC70 with 37,600 miles on it. I absolutely love it. Haven't had any mechanical problems. Very comfortable car and gets 27 mpg pn the highway. I'm not crazy over the Pirelli Scorpions OEM tires. They were great at first, but wore very quickly. I picked the car up in Germany and drove it on the Autobahn for 8 months at speeds up to 120 mph. Handled great. Not as great as my M3, but for a 4X4 with a soft suspension it was fantastic! Plenty of punch! I would suggest Volvo install a means to adjust the headlights on the inside like they do with their European models as a load in the back throws the headlights kind of high!
