Volvo S70 stalling out! HELP!
My 98 Volvo S70 stalled out and my check engine light came on. There is a rattle when it is started, sounds like it may be coming from around the catalytic converter. Anyway, I ran a scan on the check engine light and it gave me two trouble codes P0103 (mass or volumn air flow circuit high input) and P0171 (system too lean). Could a faulty O2 sensor be the blame or a bad catalytic converter or both. Please help!
How many miles on the car? When was the fuel filter changed? an O2 sensor would show as a code number. You can check for an air leak on a cold engine with a unlit propane torch. If the rattle is present on startup EVERY time it is probably a bad cat

Sounds like the classic symptoms of MAF failure.

It has 114,000 miles and we just bouhgt the car. Please give me details on how to do the propane check on a cold engine.Jot wrote:How many miles on the car? With a cold engine start it and with an unlit propane torch (gas on) move the torch around the engine and hoses, if there is a vacumn leak the engine will speed up. The usual symptom of the MAF failure is running rich not lean.

Dumb question! Do I look for that vacuum leak and fix it or are talking about replacing the MAF sensor? Sorry for the dumb %*# question. Thanks JOT.

Jot's method finds vacuum leaks, which are simpler to fix and much less $ to fix.

I tried the propane torch method last night and started my engine while cold and the engine never accelerated at all. I'm at my ropes end! Looks like I may be headed for the dealer. Thanks for everyones help though.
