I just bought a V40 wagon with 40,000 miles on it. When we got it (bought it sight unseen) I smelled gas. Turns out that it had a small hole in the fuel pump, caused by the fuel pump overheating and starting to melt. Volvo service had never seen such a problem before.
Also noticed that the car has an oily smell inside of it. My husband works for a company that machines auto parts. On the days that he goes into the plant, he comes home with an oily/machine smell to him. This is exactly the same smell that is in my car. The dealer can't find anything wrong with it, and heck, I don't know if they smell it like I do. Then again, no one could smell the gas when I could and I was definitely right on that one.
Does anyone have a similar smell in their car, or have any idea as to what can be producing the smell? Incidentally, when I turn the air on, the incoming air smells fine, so it's not being brought into the car through the a/c system. Would greatly appreciate any help, tips, advice.
And BTW, the car is parked in the garage and I think I smell a "lawnmower" type smell around it. You know, that smell you get after you use the mower and park it in the garage. My husband keeps telling me it's the lawnmover, but I don't buy that. That smell usually dissipates in a day or so. I've smelled this around the car pretty consistently. I'm wondering if it's all related somehow. The dealer did do an underbody wash, & that didn't help this lovely scent.
