"S40 Front brake pads has to go with rotors"

Post by JimmieJohnson »

Hi,

My mechanic just told that rotors needs to be replaced
everytime the front brake pads needs replacing.
According to him, unlike the japanese cars wherein
you can change the front brake pads without changing
the rotors.

Is this all true? I have 36K on my 2002 S40.

Thanks.

this simply isnt true

as long as there not dammaged, ie no runout scoring etc, then ther fine to
use with new pads, same as any other car

& this is backed up by vadis as well,

"Checking the front brake disc
Check the brake disc surface. Check the lateral runout of the brake disc if the disc is uneven. See Measuring lateral runout on brake disc (front/rear) . The brake disc must be replaced if it is very worn or grooved. See Front brake disc replacement .
Note! Minimum disc thickness = 21.5 mm. If installing new brake pads, the minimum disc thickness must be at least 22.1 mm."

If the rotors are not damaged, and are in spec:; they can go for a very long time. It's always good to have the rotors inspected, somethings (warping) you just can not see without turning them.
