1999 Volvo problems-Rebuild transmssion & shady dealer

Post by gcpreda »

hi, i just bought a volvo s80 1999, 2.9 liter non-turbo, mileage 122k, and we are having transmission problems

the used car dealer, not a volvo dealer, rebuilt the transmission and he says that our problem is because the transmission needs to be broken in after the rebuild. soooooo:

Basically, before the rebuilt---the tranny would race on gear two and not change to gear 3 until 3000 to 3500 rpm's --which made the car accelorate somewhat slow as the tranny sounded like it was working very hard, and also problems shifting/jumping from gear 2-3--a diag test said the shift silinioid was malfunctioning.

Now after the rebuild, (also 4 new oxygen sensors as well--and no inspection yet) it seems that the tranny doesn't jump to 3rd gear anymore, but STILL races to 3000 to 3500 rpm before it would shift gears to 3. on top of which the car now stalls if the rpms are too low--it has stalled on me while i was not in motion, idling uphill, and it tend to stall once in a while if i am under 20 miles an hour! in motion! also stalled a few times when i brake or am in park, and if it didn't stall, the tranny would idle strong for a second for no reason while in brake/park. so there are 2 new symptoms after the rebuild and the jumping one seems to be gone for now--can it be that i need to break in the tranny or is the guy shafting me?

the guy says he has more experience than me and he knows what he's talking about. things i'm worried about that he said it's normal:
1. i never heard of a normal tranmsission stalling a car, even if new/rebuilt
2. i said my crysler concorde 1995 piece of junk shifts to 3rd gear faster and seems to accelorate more smoothly--not faster cuz it just doesn't have pickup, but smoothly/unnoticeably into 3rd gear. he said that some care vary in the way they accelorate to gear 2-3---but i can't believe it's like this bad!
3. may it have anything to do with the catalytic converter since it was on bad oxygens sensors for a bit? jeez, i don't know.

anyone else with a 99 -- when does your care normally shift from gear to to 3? do you hear your car rebbing up somewhat loudly while accelorating at 30 mph on gear 2?

is it true that the tranny is a GM tranny? Help :( :( :x
