You'll have to call a Volvo dealer and give them your VIN number - none of us can really help you there
Try Daryl Waltrip Volvo in TN, or give these people a call:

Radios are hard coded when they're made. They aren't "recodeable".
Unless you know for certain that the radio is the original factory unit for THAT CAR, getting the VIN is pointless.
The code is specific to that particular radio. The numbers on the radio will get you the correct code.

Call your local dealer about the code. They have a database for the radios and there are serial numbers for each radio. I got a radio from my local salvage yard and then got the code from the dealer. I told them where I got the stereo from and then they looked it up. BTW, you want to buy my stereo (SC-810 and 2 cd changers) LOL???

I have a 92 940GL. I have two original cards from Volvo with the radio code but they are 6 digit codes. I've seen folks talk about 4 digit codes. Did something change?

On each side of the radio you will see a thin pc of plastic the are on the right and left side of the face of the radio, take a small flat screwdriver and press them all the way in, the will pop out about an inch or so, grab them both and gently pull to slide the radio out of the dash to re-install push radio all the way in hole and push each tab back in.

First off I have to thank the many people who posted about this trouble yesterday. I just bought a '98 S70 yesterday and put a new battery in it yesterday. I? Like many others had no idea what was going on with the code/off issue. However, I checked this website and the 2 previous owners kept IMMACULATE records for this Volvo, right down to the original sticker. Getting to the point... I found the original code and sadly it did not work. However after reading about the possibility of the radio being changed or upgraded in my case, the code would be written on top of the unit. I looked on youtube to be sure of how to remove the stereo, got up this morning, took all of two seconds to pop it and and VOILA... There was a different code written on top of the unit. I punched it in and it worked!! You guys saved my sanity. I am a first time Volvo owner. I bought this car because I wanted a really good car that had reliability as it's middle name. Even tho' it's an old 1998, because that is all a full time 48 yr old college student can afford. I must say, thus far it surpasses many many of the newer domestic cars. This forum rocks! Thanks!!
