Smell in the AC

Post by ifarrar1 »

 Please help. I posted the question about the smell from the air conditioner. This is a 1998 S70. I have had the pollen filter changed. Mentioned the problem to the service folks at Volvo when I had the 70,000 mile servicing. It helped some, but not enough.
Now it is summer and is presenting a daily problem. The smell is NOT present when the AC is on full force. It is once the car is at a good comfortable temp. and I turn the air temp closer to 68 or 70. Then within 3 minutes there is a funky smell. Kind of stale smelling, kind of moldy. It makes me sick, and I either have to turn the AC up very high and freeze (and waste gas), or turn it off and open the window. Oddly enough, we went to Florida a few weeks ago. I was dreading the trip because of the smell. We operated the AC normally and did not have the smell once. That included the drive down when I didn't have to run it full force, just normally at 70 degrees on automatic fan.

I've also frequently noticed a "fishy type" of smell coming from my a/c too. I was informed it was due to the filter. I still smell it, but only when I just turn it on.

Give this a shot: spray a disinfectant (Lysol etc.) in the AC intake with the filter removed.

I would check the drain from the condenser. If you get water sitting in there it can turn into a pretty skanky pool

Drainage holes can be blocked and need cleaning out with compressed air. If you don't do this, the a/c system still works, but the damp environment creates mould spore farms (much stinkiness). Spraying with stuff will only create a temporary solution, you'll need to get the drain holes, 'blown out' with compressed air, then spray all the affected part with a spray that will kill the mould spores (your hardware store should supply this stuff). Make sure the spray you use, is safe for your car as well (dashboard etc)
