'89 244 wageon with ?tranny problems? Topic is solved

I have a 240 1989 Volvo wageon, manual transmission. The car really 'whines' when being driven in first, second and third gear. I do have an undercarriage leak,,,and when I brought the car into the shop, the mechanic thought that it is the transmission going, or a leaking seal.
Would that cause the high pitched whine? Does that sound right?
