2001 S40 test drive

Post by Guest »

My wife and I are looking at buying our first Volvo. We found a certified pre-owned 2001 S40 and we went for a test drive. After starting the car I set my foot on the brake pedal and released the emergency/parking brake - right then a 'whistle like' noise occurred then faded out. This lasted only for a few seconds. Peroidically we would stop during our test drive and repeat the steps above and the 'noise' would occur. The length of time the whistle lasted would usually vary, from briefly to a few seconds. The dealer said they would look at it - haven't heard anything back yet and was wondering if anyone might have some insight to this.

North American V and S40s are turbocharged, and it could be that. Most turbos make some sort of faint - moderate whining noise as they spin up. Look at the boost guage next time you're in it to see if there's a correlation between it and the noise.

Thanks Matt! Question - Would the turbo unit be "spinning up" with the vehicle in park?

No, that would be odd, unless the car was experiencing an idle RPM fluctuation problem.

Ya got me on that one. Let us know if the dealer gets back to you on it.
